Wile E. Coyote's Ghost

I wrote this years ago and forgot all about it.

Carmen Miranda's Ghost is haunting Space Station Three

is a classic piece of filk that was followed some years later by

Popeye the Sailor's Ghost is haunting Space Station Four

and I figured it was a trend. So:

Wile E. Coyote's Ghost is haunting Space Station Five
We're not quite sure that he's a ghost, since he never was alive
But every time that snickering coyote laugh is heard
The freezer turns up full of chunks of some long-legged bird.

We never have caught sight of him, we've only heard him laugh
And every time we hear it, there's a sort of chilly draft
We thought it was some joker with a tape-deck and a fan
But how could all those drumsticks be part of some joker's plan?

The meat is tough and stringy, but the flavor is quite fine
We've had it fried and roasted, served with all kinds of wine
It's best in soups or stews, though, or simmered to a stock
The cook's assistants sometimes stay up cooking 'round the clock.

There's just one thing that worries me, one thing I can't explain
With so much free fresh meat, it's hard for spacers to complain
But those of who've been here long are starting, in our sleep
To run around the station going beep beep-- beep beep-- beep!
