Wishbone

Of all the scaffolding members
of a half-eaten avian carcass--
why this one?

Forked like a path,
denoter of multiple possibility
choice and chance.

Anchor of wings,
sole supporter of soaring flight
dreams and desires.

Shield of the beating heart,
bony armor behind the breast
guardian of breath

or if nothing else,
a promise of full bellies,
clutched in greasy fingers.

Call it the thankbone instead
and pull with a will. In the hearty snap
of breaking bone: Thank you, God.
