Savanna Dust

Of all the things I've lost, I think I miss
the smell of rain on hot savanna dust
more than the rest. Imaginary kiss
of all the things I've lost.
I think I miss
the silent scorpion, the adder's hiss—
these loves I knew too well to ever trust—
of all the things!
I've lost, I think. I miss
the smell of rain on hot savanna dust.

It's no wonder that I turn to your Sunday Scribblings as they become available! In this perfectly constructed poem I can practically smell that acrid scent of water touching dry ground and can feel the stillness and awareness of the untrustworthy scorpion and adder.

I agree...as soon as I read "the smell of rain on hot savanna dust", I literally smelled it as if I were standing there with the rain droplets pelting my skin. This was so beautifully written...
