Rock Solid

Be careful where you let your shadow fall,
be wary of the subtle sidewalk cracks.
You might just lose it into a brick wall
where dangerous reds dissolve to solemn blacks.

Be wary of the subtle sidewalk cracks
where lava bubbles far, far underground,
where dangerous reds dissolve to solemn blacks
and rock-solidity cannot be found.

Where lava bubbles far, far underground
it’s hard to trust that fires are safe confined
and rock-solidity cannot be found
within the borders of a troubled mind.

It’s hard to trust that fires are safe confined,
it’s hard to keep that engine running straight
within the borders of a troubled mind
among the fragments of a self-debate.

It’s hard to keep that engine running straight—
you might just lose it into a brick wall.
Among the fragments of a self-debate
be careful where you let your shadow fall.
