Flow

The brain at play is water moving, flash
of sunlight, liquid sound of of ripples over
sandbars. Now and then, a fish's splash
among the shadows where the mayflies hover,
human thoughts in motion. Water stilled
depicts the brain at rest in meditation:
silent as a pool of oil spilled
on kitchen counter or in railway station.

Don't be distracted by the mayfly swarm
of consciousness. This thinking is a tool,
a necessary cloud on every pool.
To think and act: to be the dance of form
or water calm, reflecting truer light--
these are the double sides of our birthright.
