Treacheries

Black ice lying quiet among tree shadows
Hot blue sky pregnant with hail-speckled tornadoes
Bountiful ocean turned to a wall of green thunder
Thoughts twisting poisonous in the brain that birthed them
Logs in the surf, turning, rolling and tumbling
Mottled shine of pavement in the first half-minute of rain
Cracking concrete in front of a million tons of water
Sun smiling on deep snow over ice-fanged crevasses
Rip-tide caressing the sleek flanks of its prey
Earth, solid earth, heaving up shocks
Frayed cables, a roadbed twisting over empty space
The silence of a mountain shattered to sudden ash
Inshore waters, blood-warm and breathing up hurricanes
Blind minds clinging to illusions of permanence.
