R'lyeh Rising

You have no will to wake. You dare not sleep
when nightmare claims the light you call your own
and dim R'lyeh rises from the deep.

Intrusion of insanity, the steep
descent from reason to the roads of bone
you walk and cannot wake. You dare not sleep

when every dreaming sound is rasp or creep
of twisted form through twisted halls of stone
in grim R'lyeh. Rising from the deep

comes every horror you have learned to keep
tight-muzzled, chained, the rats that you alone
can hear. Asleep, awake-- you dare not sleep,

you dare not dream, you cling to daylight. Weep
for help that isn't coming. Every moan
brings dark R'lyeh further from the deep,

nearer light. And wolf's-head men in sheep's
white coats surround you. Needles, pills, a throne
for yellow robes, R'lyeh, shattered heap
of images: "Now this will help you sleep."
You have no will to wake. You dare not sleep.
