Someday He Won't Wait

Devil came riding up from the south again,
clattered round my house shaking windows,
throwing last year's leaves around. "Get up, lazy girl,"
he said, "come dance, come dance."

Threw back the sheet and looked out the curtain.
Devil's standing on the neighbor's roof
shaking a whip of braided ivy. "Get up, get up,
come dance!"

Leave me alone, Devil! I've got things to do,
people count on me to do them. No time
to run through the sky with falling cherry petals
as my only clothes. Devil, go away

for another year. Next year, I promise I will
just like I promised last year and the year before and the year before.
