I think we have this one backwards. It's the dead who shouldn't look back; they should go on to what awaits them, and not cling to life.
The tide's at ebb, will soon be turning
We loved full well when it was high.
Now oceanwards your heart is yearning,
Don't wait for me when you die.
Beyond the flood Someone draws near
Who always loved you more than I.
Then go to greater joy, my dear
Don't wait for me when you die.
A lightless, steep and narrow track
Or open skies in which to fly?
Whatever greets you, don't look back.
Don't wait for me when you die.
