The train rolled in with the sun at her back.
"What news from the south, now what news?"
"I rolled all night, seven hundred miles of track
And all the freight I carried was the blues, lonesome blues
All the freight I carried was the blues."
"Did you bring my love from sunny southern lands?"
"Don't ask me what I did or didn't do.
I rolled all night at the engineer's command
And my wheels were sliding in the dew, frozen dew
My wheels kept sliding in the dew."
A cold, cold wind made the windowpanes rattle.
The station was deserted pretty soon.
That train rolled out headed north to Seattle
And left me with its cargo of the blues, starlight blues
Left me with a freightload of the blues.
