I saw you in an aspen grove,
the light was low and green and gold
leaf shadows flickered on your face.
White water ran over moss,
tanagers played through the thickets.
The rising moon found no face among the shadows,
the empty meadows were lit up by the dawn.
You weren’t there.
It was the end of a love affair.
I saw you cross the street downtown,
ignoring the red light.
Awnings rattled over your head.
Brown water gushed from the downspouts,
pigeons pecked at the sidewalks.
And the streetlights found you too faint to cast a shadow,
the bright-lit street was emptied by the dawn.
You weren’t there.
It was the end of a love affair.
