Leaden sky lidding warm humid air--
held breath, heat seeking release.
Leaves tremble in the lightning's glare.
Leaves shudder at a passing breeze,
fearing the bruises of brutal weather,
held breath, heat seeking release.
Tall grasses whisper, lean together
conspiring for vegetable survival
fearing the bruises of brutal weather.
This rain's destruction, not revival--
bared roots clutch eroding earth
conspiring for vegetable survival.
Summer's end will see some rebirth
but meanwhile in midsummer days,
bared roots clutch eroding earth.
Fall fogs and breezes will replace
leaden sky lidding warm humid air--
but meanwhile in midsummer days,
leaves tremble in the lightning's glare.
