Every month a grain of sand is chosen
to be swallowed by an oyster, and to grow
wrapped in white layer upon layer
of waxy oyster dreams. From dark nothing
to perfect shining roundness—fourteen days.
Then backwards dreaming, gibbous, crescent, dark.
The oyster opens up and spits it out,
a grain of sand awakens, musing:
“I dreamed I was the moon.”
