Thank God for sleep, that separates the days
one from the next. You know it doesn’t pay
to keep them chained together. We could stay
forever in a land of tense regret
forgiving, but unable to forget
or move ahead. It’s time to press “reset”
and go to bed, and let the daytime go.
Tomorrow starts anew, and lets us show
we’re not the prisoners of the things we know.
Exhaustion wraps around me like a quilt,
a haze that swallows anger, grief and guilt,
the things I broke today, the things I built—
now all surrendered, fading to a heap
of broken images. Thank God for sleep.
