Wordsplay

Well, here’s a thing I’ve never understood:
why butterflies cannot be et on toast
why Post-It notes are never stuck on posts
and woodwinds sometimes aren’t made out of wood?
Pennies turn up bad, but gold is good
and roller-coasters don’t live at the coast
but we’d be less confused about the most
obscure proverbs, if words did what they should.

A piece of verbiage can go astray
and stick itself in unrelated words
like ostrich eggs in nests of hummingbirds—
so badly out of place that one could say
the questions up above are just absurd.
Don’t take it serious! It’s all in play.

...and why doesn't 'phonetic' start with an F?

Great post!

Wonderful humorous sonnet. I, too, enjoy the sonnet form. Aren't words fun?

Your poem from last week still sticks in my mind. I've been following breadcrumbs ever since! I read it three times than read it to my husband.

Love the fun element in this posting.

Another to add to your list. An emu is a bird but it doesn't fly!

I love the way your sonnet reads so naturally! They rhymes are barely noticeable. Perfect!
