It's so sad, but true, how indifferent people actually are to the pain of others. Wonderful poem!!!

When you read the middle line as a metaphor, it can refer to so many things. The economy, Iraq, global warming, poverty, Darfur...
Nicely done.
This is such a sad reflection on just how advanced is our civilisation. We care so much about self, there is no room for anyone else!
Indifference has taken on a life of its own...nice post.
