Copy Editor's Rant

Zip your lip! No protest will be heard.
Your contribution dared to spell "extreme"
"xtreme"— decapitate a guiltless word!
We may be fossils with an antique dream,
velociraptors of the English tongue,
unworthy guardians of the alphabet,
too hidebound for the fashions of the young:
so be it. We're not ready to quit yet.

Reform our language? It's a good idea:
quicker, easier to learn. A purely
phonetic spelling certainly would be a
orthographic revolution, sorely
needed to fix English's worst defect—
Meanwhile, we've stamped your MS with "reject".

LOL I have a family member who is an editor and have heard these opinions before.

I like this:

We may be fossils with an antique dream,
velociraptors of the English tongue,
unworthy guardians of the alphabet,

Neat way of describing us!
