My God is the Lord of the avalanche,
His eye is the brilliance of sun on glaciers.
Wherever I have seen beauty I have looked upon Him
in the heart of the ocean and the pit of the volcano.
In the jaws of the lion and the rock of the desert.
I saw Him walking the girders under the Steel Bridge
and His laugh was the rumble of the heavy freight.
This morning when the leaves fell all at once
from the tree across the street from my house
it was His hand that gathered them and laid a wreath
of gold across the sleeping city.
All the crows flew up crying out in exaltation
for they felt Him pass.
