Narcissus, Daffodil, Asphodel

Oh, it’s a buccaneer’s bonanza, this
eruption from the ground; this spring
of spring’s first blossom. Narcissist
that I am, I claim to own this thing—
this living gold, as if my Ruling Ring
complete with sinister inscription. Bids
not taken, thank you. It’s fit for a king,
a king in yellow robes and flowers. Did
you know Naricssus died, the silly kid,
from self-love? That’s the same as “daffodil”
according to the dictionary. Hid
in etymology is “asphodel.”
It grows around the Acherusian Lake,
is used as poultice for the bite of snake.

words: bonanza, buccaneer, narcissist, poultice
