For Todd, who brought me a rosemary mocha in bed this morning.
Old herbals tell us, rosemary stands
for remembrance. In your hands,
a steaming mug. The smell of milk.
The smells of coffee, chocolate, and
rosemary. Remembrance of your love,
my private window onto God above.
Dawn at the window, you at my side
and rosemary mocha—it’s enough
to make any woman think her prayers
have been answered. The weather’s fair.
The sun may shine, or not—it’s only
February, season of rain and despair,
but this exercise of my poor eloquence
is for you, rosemary, and remembrance.
