I saw a man get tipsy
just from leaning over a candle flame. He said
Light makes me drunk.
I saw a woman throw herself
off of a dock for love of the flashing silver
on the flanks of the herring.
I saw a cloud race overhead
tearing itself to shreds because the wind
had sung it some promise
that I could not hear
any more than flame or fish that I could not see
with eyes and ears shut tight.
