Long after the war
they raised these stones.
Long after the war
they planted these cherry trees
and underneath them wrote haiku
of loss and return.
Now every spring a petal falls
for every refugee
for every detainee
for every family forced from home by war.
Every year the trees grow bigger—
Lord, what’s the use of memorials
when people forget?

Oh my Lord that is haunting and beautiful. Every hear the trees get bigger. More petals drop.
So great. Truly.
