The birds are rousing by the coffeeshop
and the man with the wolfhound walks
across the intersection and meets a woman
with a basket of rolled-up newspapers.
She admires his beautiful dog
but doesn’t have the nerve to say
hello, can I pet him, can we go
somewhere and drink coffee?
There’s nowhere
to go this morning
away from the chatter
of mating birds—
the wolfhound grabs a paper and he’s off
down the street while a man and a woman laugh.
