Sugar is yellow light captured
by the alchemy of emerald, dissolved
in the thin liquor of plant saps.
Bled forth in drops of liquid gold
that tiger-furred bees swallow and
bring forth as slow amber honey.
Or dripping from translucent bodies of aphids
clinging to the undersides of green
umbrellas raised against solar desiccation.
Or recrystallized from the verdant blood
of lush canes smashed, ground, boiled
to tar-thick black molasses.
Sugar is sunlight--
no wonder we crave it.

I crave it all right, more so because I can't have it. Bravo for the take.
Sweet! (To speak in more current slang than is my norm...)
This is wonderful! Sap and honey and aphid drip and molasses... Emerald and gold and amber...
Sugar is yellow light captured
Sugar is sunlight--
no wonder we crave it.
This is a real gem. Thank you for sharing this beauty with us.
This poem is a genuine pleasure to read. The repetition, almost soundlessly, moves just like sap through the stem, moving relentlessly - all till I began to wonder just where this poem would go. Then in two so simple lines, we arrive as the poem's point of view eye turns around from near microscopic to our own internal selves. The repetitive idea come home, thus summed for us. An excellent job!
The golds and greens are wonderful, and all those Ls read beautifully, still, I think I like the harder molasses group best.
Brilliant colors. Spun sugar sunlight in all its refinements!
Beautiful images and colors infused throughout. Very nice!
